It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

I can't believe December is already here! I don't know how this year has passed so quickly - but the winter weather is reminding us that Christmas will be here before we know it.

Christmas is my favorite time of year! I love the smell of freshbaked goodies, the carolers singing, and the love shown to all our fellow men! Christmas is a wonderful reminder of the blessings around us of family and friends. It makes me happy to find the perfect gift to surprise each of our children with on Christmas morning.

My favorite part of Christmas is the family traditions we continue each year. Choosing and decorating our Christmas tree, reading 'twas the Night Before Christmas, and having our special Christmas Breakfast.

Merry Christmas!

Farmer Buzz is Back On The Tractor Again!

A Heart Warming Experience - As written by Farmer Buzz Fournier

As Farmer Buzz for Young's Farm for 14 years, giving thousands of hay rides during the Pumpkin Festivals I became emotionally attached to the family's that returned each fall.  Sometimes I would ask if any of the young kids would like to help me drive the 1939 Farmal Tractor.  Usually the boys and girls would drive for a minute or two.  It seemed that the 6 to 10 year old kids liked it the most.

Five years ago on the last day and knowing this was going to be the very last hay ride it was hard for me to speak and tell my corny jokes to the wagon load of people who shared my emotions.  In order to hide the tears, I selected this 8 year old boy to drive the rest of the trip, as I stood next to him assisting with the gear shifting.  Several times he turned to look at me as the tears now were dripping from my chin.  He asked if I was ok, and I probably replied something like any Grampa would say, "Someday when you are driving your own tractor helping young kids enjoy themselves you will understand why I'm crying."  As we finished the hay ride I gave him my name badge.

It has been 5 years since the Young's left for Oregon and now the Mortimer Family has asked if I would come back to give the "Farmer Buzz Hay Rides."  This past weekend a 13 year old boy waited in a long line to get on the hay ride with his parents.  He looked me straight in the eye - almost 6 foot tall I guess.  He asked if I remembered him.  I replied, give me a little hint - to which he replied "I drove your tractor."  Well that wasn't enough to help my brain to sort out which one he was but his next hint brought back the identity of this young man.  He reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out my old Farmer Buzz name tag.  Wow!  His mom, who had been off to the side with her camera, came up to enter our conversation.  She said that name tag has been on top of his dresser for 5 years, and when he heard the Mortimer's opened up the farm again, he asked if Old Farmer Buzz would come back.  The truth is, to this young man, Farmer Buzz never left.  It was a good day!

Mortimer Family Farms Brings Back The Pumpkins!

The time has finally arrived! Mortimer Family Farms Pumpkins and fall decorations are ready!  Bring your family to our pumpkin patch and enjoy a day on the farm!  It has been so fun to grow pumpkins of all shapes & sizes, corn stalks, Indian corn, straw bales, gourds, and other fun fall items for you to display in your homes.  Our Pumpkin Festival is open every weekend in October with hay rides, barrel train rides, Freedom Station bounce activities, Farm Animal Kingdom, music, crafts, food vendors and more!  We will also have special weekend events including:  October 15-16 Tractor Pull, October 22-23 Pumpkin Decorating, October 29-30 Trick-or-Treating & Costume Competition!  Admission is Free!

We also have had a great time getting to know the children in our local schools as they come for field trips to learn about agriculture!  It is wonderful to meet these kids - many of whom have never been on a farm - and see their excitement!  They love the to see the animals and how plants grow!  We take them on a hay ride and show them how important water and soils are to farmers!  Of course the kids leave with a pumpkin of their very own...to brag to their siblings about...and what kid doesn't love that?  If your school is interested call 928-830-1116 today and reserve your day at the farm!

Thank you all and we will see you soon!

Sweet Corn is On It's Way...

Well - as you can imagine the most asked question I have been asked since March when we announced our new farm is "Are you growing sweet corn - When will it be ready?"  Well the answer is YES and SOON!

Gary, the kids and myself stopped by the farm after church yesterday and had to "test" the sweet corn!  It is doing great!  The corn has gone thru the stages of tassel, silk and are now making each kernal of corn...we will be serving up a nice big batch of corn before you know it!  As soon as it is ready we will have it available for purchase at our farm store - along with squash, onions, cantalope, tomatoes, beets, and more!

Keep checking our website for updates to our vegetable availability or call us at 928-830-1116 anytime!

A Day with the FFA!

Gilbert High School FFA Farm Tour 2011
Walking the fields this morning with the FFA (Future Farmers of America) from Gilbert High Ag Center I was excited to see their enthusiasm and excitement about farming.  We had a wonderful discussion of their plans for the future and how they will be a part of all our futures...Providing food for our tables.  We discussed how the average age of American Farmers keep increasing and we are in desperate need of young farmers and ranchers to continue food production in America.  I hope they will take the challenge and find a way they can be involved in American Agriculture now and for many years in the future!

Thanks to the FFA and 4H organizations for all they do to encourage and educate young people of the benefits and challenges in American Agriculture.
